1. Upgrade your roof to downgrade wildfire damage

California residents have seen the terrible damage wildfires cause, but wildfires can pop up in any part of the country. To help protect you during a fire, upgrade your roof to an ignition-resistant, non-combustible material, such as concrete tile or asphalt composition shingles. In the event that a fire does come into contact with your home, a non-combustible roof will greatly increase the chances that your roof won’t catch fire or cave in, giving you and your family additional time to evacuate.

Because it’s not run on electricity, you can use it even when the power is out. This way, a great deal of damage to your home can be easily avoided.

5. Clean and protect your gutters
Falling leaves and winter storms can cause leaves, branches and dirt to clog your gutters and downspouts. When spring and summer rains come, it can cause water to back up under your shingles. This is a great time to clean your gutters out and protect them with a gutter guard. Gutter guards act like a filter, preventing leaves, twigs and other debris from entering them while allowing water to flow freely. They are inexpensive and can be picked up at most home supply stores.

Wicker Furniture Cleaning Hints & Tips

To remove surface dust, regularly vacuum wicker furniture using the soft bristle brush attachment.
To get stubborn dirt, fuzz, or animal hair out of the crevices use a new, dry paintbrush to brush it out, or use an ice-pick, awl or tweezers to pull out the material.

Wipe up any spills with a clean cloth, dampened with a light detergent or Murphy’s Oil Soap in water.

Reed wicker can be thoroughly cleaned outdoors by using the spray hose and light detergent. Rinse well and dry completely before using again. Use caution here, because water can lift the finish. Paper fibre rush wicker should never be sprayed with or immersed in water, since it’s made of twisted paper and may be destroyed by water.

Maintain even humidity in your home to keep antique wicker happy.

Too low humidity level causes the wicker to dry out and become brittle, but too high humidity subjects the wicker to mold and mildew. Consider using a dehumidifier if your furniture is subjected to high humidity conditions or at least move the wicker piece to an area with good air circulation.

If you do notice mold or mildew growing on your wicker furniture, clean immediately with a solution of bleach in water.

Vacuum it first, then use a soft-bristle brush to remove dirt and mold, wash with bleach solution, rinse well, then dry thoroughly in the shade on a warm, windy day. Do not sit on until completely dry, about two or three days. Remove the wicker piece from the area that allowed mold and mildew to collect on it in the first place, and relocate to an area with good air circulation and low humidity.

To add life to the seats of your wicker furniture, use padded chair seat cushions.

This hint is especially good for both a woven reed wicker and paper fibre seats, but also for any cane seat over 14 inches in diameter.

Never subject your antique wicker furniture to the harsh weather elements of sun, rain, snow or wind.

The fibers deteriorate from the sun, becoming dry and brittle, and the glue joints might loosen. The fibers can also deteriorate from the excess moisture of dew, rain, and snow, causing the furniture’s hardwood frames to warp.

Using your antique wicker on unprotected decks or out in the garden is a big “no-no” however, a 3-season porch or porch with wide overhang is usually tolerated for limited periods.

Five Tips for Preventing Water Damage in Apartment Units

Clear skies and warm days don’t always mean that apartment properties will remain high and dry. Regardless of the season, apartment units can become shallow water pools if they are not properly maintained. Something as simple as a worn out washer hose can flood an apartment and cause as much water damage beyond wet carpet as can torrential rains.

When walls and baseboards get wet, the likelihood of more severe internal issues rises dramatically. Usually, a remediation service must be called to get a handle on the situation. Water drying can be expensive, especially if remediation is required at apartment properties that contain asbestos and lead paint. Mold is another issue.

Years ago, the right fix for cleaning up a water-damaged unit was summoning a carpet cleaner or plumber to vacuum and dry the carpet. After water was collected, a few fans were strategically placed to speed the drying process. But over the years, cleaning up a damaged unit has gone beyond the need for a good shop vac and a fan. Mold growth in apartment units and businesses resulting from water damage and other types of moisture have been widely reported in the media, first appearing in the 1980s when a Chicago home was discovered to have high levels of black mold. Mold growth in homes has escalated since they began becoming energy efficient in the 1980s. Tighter buildings mean better insulation, vapor barriers, and better windows and doors. Homes are so tight there is no way for the moisture to escape.

Today, properly drying a water-damaged apartment unit involves high-tech solutions to ensure that moisture is eliminated in walls, ceilings, and floors. Dehumidification and air movement equipment, as well as monitoring moisture in the air and walls, is essential to drying the unit.

Cost to remediate a typical apartment unit that is fully saturated can add up quickly. For example, two or three dehumidifiers and as many as a dozen blowers can be needed to dry a unit. Dehumidifiers can each cost $75-$110 per day, depending on geographical location, and blowers $25 per day each. Add in tearing out walls, putting in new drywall, base boards and carpet, and the bill can escalate into the thousands.

Like with many things, prevention can keep your units from becoming a water park. The first step is for property managers to identify typical causes of flooding, and make any necessary repairs or modifications. Typically, investing in new hoses, insulation, or just taking precautionary measures for an upcoming cold front are far less extensive, and expensive, than having to call a water remediation specialist to restore a damaged unit.

Here are a few helpful tips to reduce the likelihood of flooding and keep your apartment units – and residents – dry:

Seasonalize

During winter when frozen pipes thaw, troubles are just beginning. As severe winter weather approaches, educate residents on what do to avoid burst pipes. Some of the biggest floods we have in Denver are when people leave town and turn off their heat, or in vacant units when property owners choose to save on their energy bill and shut off the heating system. And if nobody checks unattended units and discovers the water works, the problem gets worse.

In spring, torrential downpours can mean that water infiltrates cracked slabs and foundations. This can also happen from a heavy snow melt.

When cold weather or a storm is on the way, property managers should post signs to alert residents to leave faucets dripping, open cabinet doors, and set thermostats at 60 degrees when leaving for extended periods. Also, all external water spigots should be properly insulated, and the heat turned on in vacant units.

Check Aging Appliances

Properties that include washers in units should closely monitor the age of the appliance and routinely check for cracked or damaged hoses and connections. Washer hoses should be replaced every five years. Also, replacing worn out washers and dishwashers before there is a problem is a good idea. According to the National Association of Home Builders, a typical washer lasts 13 years; a dishwasher is good for 10 years. And don’t forget to inspect water heaters, which usually need replacing after 11-14 years.

Insulate Water Pipes

Whether for sprinkler systems or hot and cold water, pipes should be insulated year round. All accessible pipes should be covered within 3 feet of the water source. Use quality pipe insulation wrap, or neatly taped strips of fiberglass insulation around the pipes. Plus, insulating hot water pipes can reduce heat loss and raise the water temperature 2°-4° than those that are not insulated. Wrapped lines can save energy expense and water.

Check for HVAC System Blockages

A plugged drain that moves condensation from the HVAC system can create water damage. Water can seep through ceilings and into light fixtures or drip in between walls, which can go undetected and create a mold problem. A heating and air professional can blow out clogged line so that water moves away from the unit.

Check Sewage Systems

An older apartment complex most likely has an aged sewage system. Over the years, tree roots in shaded communities seek moisture and often penetrate sewer lines through cracks and fittings. Lines become blocked and a nasty, messy backup is inevitable if the line isn’t maintained. Some chemical root retarders have proven effective, but a good preventive measure is to call a specialist to annually clean roots out of the line.

Some flooding is simply unavoidable, but being proactive with issues that are within a property owner’s control can save thousands of dollars in damage to apartment units. Is your property prepared to head off even the most common and controllable causes for water damage?

Teak Furniture Care

Teak Care:

All Classic Teak quality teak wood products are manufactured from Java teak wood specially selected from reserved production forests, carefully managed by the government forestry agency.

Teak is a tropical hardwood with a beautiful golden /honey brown color when it is new. Over time, as natural teak is exposed to the elements, it gradually changes color from the honey color of new teak to a silver-grey patina which distinguishes finely aged, outdoor teak. After a while this silver-grey patina deteriorates to a dark-grey and greenish look if it remains untreated.

Teak furniture, when left bare and un-sanded, will fade to a natural silver-grey color. This color transformation does not affect the durability of the teak furniture or the wood itself.

To maintain the smooth finish and golden brown color, you will need to sand your teak furniture regularly. To prolong the period of time needed between sandings, teak oil can also be applied.

If you choose to apply teak oil, apply every 3 months, or follow the teak oil container instructions. If you choose to maintain the smooth brown finish of your new teak furniture, this method requires some maintenance for upkeep, such as sanding and reapplication of teak oil. Teak oil does not prolong the life of teak but simply maintains the golden brown color.

Staining:

Please note, once you stain your teak, you cannot return to the natural golden brown or silver-grey color without numerous sandings. Stain is intended to be permanent. If you choose to stain your furniture after it has turned silver-grey, you must first sand it before applying stain.

Do not leave teak furniture in puddles of water or on wet ground.

Cover your teak furniture during winter months or move it into covered area.

Cleaning Short-cuts

Map a Cleaning Route

For a one-story house or an apartment, start with a corner room and work inward. If you have a two-story house, start with a room at the top corner of your home and work your way in and down. Clean each room completely before moving on to save energy and time wasted from walking back and forth.

Break Up Chores

Instead of spending an entire day or weekend cleaning, clean half the house, or one story of a two-story, on one day or afternoon. Clean the other half or other story on another afternoon. Reserve a block of time for the attic,basement, or garage.

When to Hire a Professional

Consider hiring a professional window cleaner once a year, especially if you have a two-story house or storm windows. Hire a gutter- or roof-cleaning service in late fall. Choose services that are bonded and insured, and get at least three references. Depending on your time and house size, rent the necessary carpet-cleaning equipment, or hire a service. If you are renting equipment, steam-clean all carpets at the same time to save money. When hiring a service, some companies offer discounts to clean three or more rooms.

In the Kitchen

Keep your kitchen in order by creating a place for everything. Store cookware and utensils near the range or cooktop so they are within reach when cooking. Keep a spray bottle with a solution of one part bleach to four parts water or an all-purpose spray cleaner in the kitchen for cleaning after meals.

Learn the Basics of Flooring

Before You Begin

Here are three oft-forgotten floor-shopping considerations:

1. Sheet, plank, or tile? The type of installation is important if you're doing it yourself. But it's also a question of aesthetics. Determine where -- or if -- you want to see seams or grout lines.

2. How do you clean it? There is no such thing as a maintenance-free floor. Carpet requires vacuuming and periodic deep cleaning. Wood floors need dusting, waxing, and occasional refinishing. Even hard-wearing ceramic tilesmust be grout-sealed and mopped.

3. How does it feel? Make sure you know how your flooring choices feel -- and sound -- underfoot. Moisture-hardy tile in the bath, for example, might be too cold for some bare feet.

Compare Apples to Apples

When you're working out your floor budget, be prepared to use some basic math and geometry muscles. Regardless of whether you're comparing sheet, plank, tile products, or carpet, reduce everything to a price per square foot. Make sure to add the costs of any required substrates, which provide structure and support, and underlayments, which provide vapor protection, padding, and/or acoustical control.

Form a Solid Foundation

Sometimes a new floor can be installed on top of an existing floor, such as the gluelesslaminate shown here. If needed, a liquid leveling product can be applied to even out seams, cracks, or texturing. An additional substrate of 1/4 inch or more thickness will ensure stability. (Some products, such as laminates, feature an integrated substrate.)

Warning: Multiple layers of flooring may require the altering or repositioning of cabinets, door frames, toilets, molding, and more.

Manage Moisture

Some flooring types are particularly susceptible to moisture. Laminate, wood, and other floating floors expand and contract with changing humidity levels. Follow manufacturer recommendations on whether a product should be used in kitchens, baths, or below-grade applications such as basements. Ceramic tile(shown) or vinyl products may be better options.

4 Household Repairs Anyone Can Do

Stained grout. Because it’s porous, tile sealant inevitably absorbs more grime than you can remove. So rather than go at it with a bleach-dipped toothbrush yet again, pick up Grout Ink from Stone Care International ($8) — it’s as easy to use as a Magic Marker. Clean the surface of any dirt first, and apply one coat in a shade that matches your grout (white, gray, or earth tone). Wait an hour; apply a second coat. In our tests, treated white grout looked almost new and results held up for weeks.

Wood-furniture dent. Your daughter tossed her cell phone on the coffee table and dinged the wood. Here’s how to fix that dropped call: Simply dampen a large cotton dishtowel, fold it into quarters, and place it over the spot. Set your iron to high (without steam), and press the cloth a few seconds (making sure the iron doesn’t touch the wood) until the water from the towel stops steaming. If the grain is still a little dented, repeat. Follow up with a coat of furniture polish on the entire tabletop.

Squeaky door. Creaky entryways and closets are great in scary movies, but not in real life. To exorcise the sound effects, first shut the door tight (so it won’t fall) and pull out the center pin from one hinge. If the pin is in snugly, hold a screwdriver against the bottom and with a hammer, lightly tap upward until it comes loose. Clean the pin with an abrasive scrubbing pad, like 3M’s Scotch-Brite Heavy Duty Scour Pad ($2.29 for a three-pack), and coat with a little petroleum jelly. Dab some on its end so as you reinsert the pin, you also coat the inside of the hinge. (Insert pin from the top and tap it down, if you have to.) Open and close the door a few times to work the jelly in, adding more from the outside if necessary. Repeat with remaining hinges.

Peeling wallpaper. No need to call in professional help every time a corner of the dining room wallpaper curls up. Make it stay put, once and for all, with Red Devil’s House and Home Restore Wallpaper Seam Repair ($3 for a 5-ounce tube). A GHRI favorite, this adhesive is easy to apply: Just spread a thin, even coat on the wall (or the back of the paper) and press into position. The tube has a crank, so you can roll as you go, keeping the product fresh. In tests, even high humidity couldn’t peel our re-fastened paper.

6 Mythical Ways to Predict a Storm

MYTH: If a dog starts to whine for no reason, you can expect a major storm.

Before computers, radars, televisions and radios, our ancestors relied on their furry buddies to help warn them of incoming disasters. Many of their predictions were based on an ever-present barometer, their animal’s nose—they thought that if Fido was wailing, a storm must be on its way.

MYTH: Cats can predict windstorms

Is the cat scratching up a post like crazy? Then (city residents) might want to prepare for high winds! At least, a cat scratching a post was the most telling sign for farmers that an impending storm was near. Good old Patches also could warn them of snow (if she was turned away from the fire) or rain storms (if she was washing her face).

MYTH: If a cat licks its fur against the grain, a hailstorm is coming….

Before radars existed, sailors brought cats on board to help predict the weather (and to chase the rats that made their way into the sailors’ food supplies!). Hail was on the way if the cat licked its fur against the grain (fair warning for those in the Southeast!). If the cat sneezed, the sailors knew to prepare for rain, and if a cat was acting frisky, a windstorm was brewing!

MYTH: If the anthill is closed, a thunderstorm is on the way.

During the Zhou Dynasty (1046-256 BC) in China, people perfected the art of weather prediction via animals. But they weren’t drawing conclusions from cats and dogs—they were using insects! According to this proverb, a closed anthill indicated a thunderstorm in the near future.

MYTH: Aching knees predict a storm.

How many times has your grandma claimed to predict an incoming rainstorm with her aching knees? Research has shown that a change in barometric pressure can cause joint pain, so while grandma’s predictions certainly aren’t scientifically accurate, there may be some truth of a storm in those sore knees!

MYTH: A ring around the moon means rain or snow is coming.

An old folk legend states that if you see a ring around the moon, you can predict rain. Unfortunately, the ring around the moon is an optical illusion—you’re actually seeing diffracted light rays hitting ice crystals in our own atmosphere. So while the ring may indicate that a rainstorm is on the way in the (city), you’re better off checking the radar to make a firm prediction!

How the Experts Really Do Predict Storms in the Southeast

No cats, ants or knees here—today, meteorologists predict the weather using radar, satellite and light detection (LIDAR) technology. With these devices, meteorologists can see large air masses and where they’re forming over the earth. Because air masses typically move quite predictably, scientists can predict weather patterns and types fairly accurately. It’s when they try to predict specific storms that things get a little less certain.

Hurricanes

As Southerners know, hurricanes have a “season” from June to November. Each April, meteorologists can predict the number of storms that will form in the coming season, their paths and their severity using statistical data. Once a hurricane forms, meteorologists can see it on radars within three to five days of it forming, giving them a small lead-time to create a watch and to warn citizens. Of course, a hurricane’s intensity and path can never be predicted to total accuracy, which makes it all the more important that residents in the South have emergency kits and evacuation plans mapped out well in advance.

Thunderstorms

Thunderstorms form when warm, moist air hits unstable atmospheric conditions and that air rises quickly through the atmosphere—a frequent occurrence in the humid Southeast! Every day, meteorologists across the globe release weather balloons that rise into the atmosphere and transmit data about temperature, pressure, wind and moisture back to the scientists. They can then plot this information to forecast afternoon and evening storms. Satellites and radars also monitor weather patterns that could turn into thunderstorms. Wet weather events, of course, can cause real damage to your home. Be sure you have emergency contacts ready at your fingertips in case of basement flooding or your roof springs a leak.

Things That Go Boom in the Night

With thunderstorms, it’s not really the thunder that gets you—it’s the rain. The South often suffers through copious downpours in the spring. Warm, moisture-laden air travels over most of the country at this time of year, bringing much needed water to freshly sprouting vegetation. You’ll enjoy those May flowers. In the meantime, you may not enjoy the flooding and mold problems that happen when rain is too much of a good thing.

What to Do:

· Clean out your gutters and check them for leaks. Don’t forget to check the downspouts for hidden clogs. Use a garden hose sprayer and a plumber’s snake to unblock downspouts if necessary.

· Consider grading your lawn and installing French drains to direct water away from your foundation and prevent water from pooling in your yard.

· If you have a basement, ensure that the sump pump has a backup power source. Otherwise, it won’t do you any good during a thunderstorm accompanied by a power outage. Installing a backup sump pump is also a good idea. You might even install one with an alarm that lets you know when the basement is flooding. These days, alarm messages can be sent to your phone!

With Hailstones Like These, Who Needs Golf Balls?

Hailstorms are often accompanied by lightning and high winds. It’s like Nature is pitching a fit—when it all starts hitting the roof it’s not a pretty sight.

What to Do:

· Close your blinds, shades or curtains. Fasten these window coverings to the windowsill or wall with tape or tacks. That way, if hail does break a window, the glass won’t be blown throughout the room.

· Stock up on some plywood and plastic sheeting so you can immediately patch up damaged windows and prevent rain from getting inside your house.

· Use thick blankets to protect vehicles and other property that can’t be put under a carport or in the garage. This may reduce the impact of hail enough to avoid paint damage and minor dents.

· If the hail is severe and large (at least ¾” in diameter), go ahead and call a roofing restoration specialist while you wait it out. That way, you can be one of the first clients on the list for damage assessment and repairs after the storm.

Everyone Knows It’s Windy

Straight-line winds are common throughout the southern regions of the U.S. as the weather warms up. · Install storm shutters and wind resistant doors. These can be helpful in protecting against wind, keeping out water and preventing damage from tornadoes that are accompanied by hail.

· Add a vertical bracing system to your garage door. This type of system takes only a few minutes to put in place (after initial installation) so you can prep your garage at a moment’s notice.

· Prune trees so that the branches are a safe distance away from the roof or other structures around the house. Branches scraping across the roof can do a lot of damage to shingles and flashing. Broken limbs falling on your roof can cause an instant leak.

· If a piece of yard furniture is light enough for you to lift it, high winds can probably pick it up too. Store loose furniture, toys, decorations, lawn equipment, and other items in a garage or shed. Offer to help neighbors move their lawn furniture too since windstorms don’t respect property lines!

Colored Easter Egg Wreath

This easy-to-make Easter wreath adds a pop of pretty pastel color to your front door. Using an awl, poke a small hole in each end of 12 plastic eggs. Cut 1/2x3-inch strips of patterned paper, cutting small slits along the edges to reduce wrinkling.

Brush Mod Podge onto the back of one paper strip and apply to an egg, pressing out the excess glue or air bubbles; repeat until egg is covered. After all the eggs are covered, brush two thin coats of Mod Podge over the eggs, letting them dry in between coats; let dry. String the eggs onto a 16-gauge wire, allowing an extra inch at each end; clip the wire. Wrap one end around the other to form a wreath shape; cover wire ends with a pretty pastel ribbon and hang.

Spring Watering Can with Flowers

Filling a rustic watering can with pink tulips, greenery, and pastel blue eggshells is the perfect decoration for spring. Stuff the watering can with floral foam to secure the stems. Add picks to blown-out eggshells to secure them as well. When you're finished creating the arrangement, wire it to your front door and cover the wire with ribbon.

Editor's Tip: To keep flowers fresh, put the stems in water vials or heavy plastic bags filled with floral foam powder, available at floral supply stores.

Jelly Bean Front Door Monogram

Instead of a wreath, hang a fun monogram on your front door for spring. Paint a papier-mache letter (available at crafts) using acrylic paint in a pretty spring color, such as the soft purple shown here. For a single-color decoration, match the paint color to the jelly beans; if you want a multi-color decoration mix pastel jelly beans and a single color of paint for the letter. Once the paint is dry, hot-glue the jelly beans to the front of the letter and let dry. Hot-glue a ribbon to the back to create a hanging loop and attach to your front door.

Keeping a room's wall colors neutral allows you to add any accent color you like to furniture and other accessories. In this airy beach-cottage living room, light blue upholstery and playful patterned pillows spice up soft gray walls and buttery yellow floors. 4 Worst Southeast Mudslides and Other Wet Weather Disasters

Have you ever seen video images of a mudslide in action? The power of all that wet soil bearing down on houses and other buildings is immense. Mudslides in the Southeast affect homes in several significant ways: structural damage to the foundation and load bearing walls from the weight of the mud, water damage from related flooding and infiltration with bacteria and sludge from broken sewer lines in the affected area. At Paul Davis Restoration of Central Mississippi we have experience restoring all of the types of damage your home may sustain in a mudslide. We want you to know that you can pull through disasters like this with help from our experienced and compassionate restoration professionals.

Flooding from wet weather happens in the most fertile areas of the country (along rivers and coastlines) and poses the biggest mudslide danger for Louisiana and other areas of the South.

Most landslide or mudslide events are also precipitated by heavy rainfall events like hurricanes and natural disasters such as flooding. Broken dams or levees can also inundate a town with muddy water. And that’s not all! This danger can occur anywhere there is steep terrain or unstable soil such as the sinkholes in Florida.

In 2005, Hurricane Katrina left 80% of New Orleans under 15 feet of sewage-contaminated water. The storm left 81.2 billion dollars in total damage in its wake. Conflicting death tolls that include seven different states range from 1,464 to 1,836. However, 135 people remain missing to this day and are not included in the official death totals. Many of those deaths occurred away from the immediate coastline. Lingering health problems associated with the aftermath may have killed more people. The area affected encompassed over 90,000 square miles. Over one million residents were displaced because of this storm.
An unnamed 1938 hurricane hit the Eastern seaboard of the US and killed 494 people in associated floods. It caused 306 million dollars in damages. The Southern states are notorious for being affected by weather events that begin in other regions. Therefore, it’s vitally important for residents in this region to weatherproof your homes way advance of the changing seasons and always be vigilant of weather patterns in surrounding areas such as along the East Coast.
The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 resulted in 400 million dollars in damage and 246 deaths in 7 different states. The Mississippi valley and along the Red River are areas that flood frequently (not that we have to tell you that!) If you live in a coastal area that is subject to hurricanes, along a lakeshore or by a river, be sure to take basic safety precautions against wet weather disasters and potential mudslides by creating an evacuation and communication plan and listening for reports about contaminated water if you’re staying in the area.
The Great Mississippi and Missouri Flood of 1993 was one of the worst floods in US history with property damage of about 15 billion dollars. A total of 50 people were killed throughout a wide area of the country. 8 Ways Your Home Can Be Infiltrated in a Storm

Your home is supposed to be a sanctuary – a shelter in the storm. But all too often a flood, hurricane or other severe weather event can penetrate that sanctuary, and the aftermath isn’t pretty. At Paul Davis Restoration of Central Mississippi, we’ve seen even sturdy, well-maintained properties sustain serious damage in stormy weather. Once a home is opened to the elements, things get worse rapidly. That’s why it’s so important to repair storm-related damage ASAP. Here’s a list of the most common ways your home can be infiltrated by the outside world in a storm…and what to do about it!

1. Scared Rodents

People and pets aren’t the only ones seeking a safe place to hide in a hurricane. Birds, raccoons, snakes and rats may all be looking for ways into your home during a storm. An improperly maintained chimney or a missing fascia vent is all they need to infiltrate your attic. Once they move down into your walls, you’re in real trouble. The sooner you get them cleared out (along with their droppings and nesting materials), the better.

2. Falling Trees

In a windstorm or a hurricane, trees are often unavoidable casualties. A heavy tree limb, a huge palm frond, or an entire uprooted sapling can pierce through a roof with enough force to reach all the way into the attic. Even smaller branches can damage shingles – leading to insidious leaks that develop slowly over time. Either way, you can end up with mold in your attic insulation. Limit your home’s risk of tree damage by keeping branches trimmed at least 3 feet away from your roof.

3. Broken Windows

You may have heard that the sudden drop in air pressure during a hurricane can cause windows to explode. That’s a dramatic idea, but flying debris is the usual culprit when your windows end up broken in a storm. [Location] residents have reported golf ball-sized hail that’s driven sideways by the wind cracking windows. Even if a window isn’t broken, the seal around the window may be damaged by severe weather. This makes windows a prime entry point for moisture that leads to mildew.

4. Clogged Gutters

A mixture of fast wind and hard rain can strip trees of twigs and leaves in minutes. All this vegetation can create a real logjam in your gutters. When water can no longer drain through your downspouts, it has to go somewhere. Most of it will pour over the edge of your gutters. This is bad news if you have a basement since waterlogged soil contributes to seepage. Of course, the rainwater that doesn’t flow over the side of the gutters may back up into any cracks and crevices in your home’s eaves. The wood will swell as it gets wet and then shrink again as it dries. Each time this happens, the cracks and areas of rot get bigger. That’s a welcome sight for termites and other wood-eating insects!

5. Backed Up Sewers

Sewage backup is by far the nastiest storm disaster. Torrential rains, hurricanes and spring flooding are all culprits in overloading or blocking storm drains and sewer systems. Mold isn’t the only problem you have to worry about when you get sewage backup in your home. Untreated water is often teeming with bacteria. If a sewer in your neighborhood is backed up, immediately plug up all your drains (including the toilet). These are the prime entry points for sewage infiltration. 6. Rising Waters

Coastal regions are frequent sites of storm-related flooding. Rising waters from a flash flood make a big splash (no pun intended), but a rising water table underground can also cause flooding in your basement. Pay attention to the total amount of rainfall and storm surge occurring in your area to gauge your risk for flooding. Use the National Weather Service to check for flash flood warnings in your area.

7. High Winds

In the most extreme winds, your shingles may achieve lift off. Incorrect installation (particularly the placement of nails) is a common cause of asphalt shingle loss during high winds. Check your roof after a windstorm, paying close attention to the edges of the roofline where shingles are most vulnerable.

8. Muddy Footprints

Sometimes, the one bringing the stormy mess inside is you! Sometimes it’s hard not to track wet soil indoors when it’s everywhere. If you do end up with sludge in your house, get a professional to look at the dirty areas. Some soils contain lots of iron, which causes staining. Other kinds of dirt are filled with grit, which can tear up your carpets if you let it get ground in. Correct cleanup from mud damage will depend on what type of soil you have in your area.

Thinking green when building or remodeling means an efficient use of resources that reduces the impact the building will have on human health and the world around us. Don’t let the cost deter you; it’s often an economically affordable choice. More and more homeowners are considering ways to remodel green, and if you are remodeling it’s likely that you’re going to need wood. Here is an overview of just some things to consider about the building blocks of your next project.

Sustainable wood is harvested from carefully managed forests where the process from planting to cropping is sensitive to environmental concerns. Sustainable forest operations are committed to ecological responsibility and the health and longevity of their forests. The two most common wood options are hardwoods such as oak and redwood, and softwoods from trees such as pine, cedar, and spruce. Their difference resides, as the name suggests, in the woods’ durability. Though hardwood tends to stand up to more abuse, it is harvested from older growth forests that take longer to replenish.

How can a homeowner or contractor be assured they are receiving materials that are sustainably produced? Because many old woods provide exceptional quality and beauty, they are well worth recovering from old buildings, factories, warehouses, and residences for use in new projects. Gridiron Heroes - Mississippi Burn Foundation

On Saturday, February 18, 2012, at 3:30 p.m., National Football League players will brighten the day of some of Mississippi’s youngest burn victims. NFL players will meet the children and their families at Strike Entertainment (the old Larwil Lanes) for a meet and greet as well as pizza and bowling. Local firefighters and a fire truck will also be on hand to encourage the children scarred by burn injuries.

Following the Meet and Greet, NFL players will be transported on the fire truck to Buffalo Wild Wings in Ridgeland to participate in Gridiron Heroes. This benefiting Mississippi’s burn victims will raise money for medical and transportation costs related to severe burn injuries. The fundraiser, which begins at 7:30 p.m., will include a silent auction of autographed items donated by NFL players across the league. Tickets to the event are $25 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under. The ticket covers admission, food, and drink.

Weather Disasters: 10 Ridiculously Unprepared Homes – Would Yours Make the List?

When you become comfortable in a home over a period of years, sometimes you can become blind to the structural fixes it needs. The experts at Paul Davis Restoration of Central Mississippi have seen how floods, windstorms, wildfires and other weather disasters can unfortunately leave even the most sturdily built home in a pile of rubble. Through our years of service restoring homes and personal property, we know that a house that’s unprepared or constructed with the wrong materials for any given region can be seriously damaged by an event that leaves other structures unscathed. Here are pictures of 10 houses that will be in big trouble when the next storm hits.

1. Rain, Rain, Go Away

The gutters in this home in Antioch, Virginia, aren’t just clogged with a few leaves and twigs. They’re supporting an entire ecosystem! When gutters are stopped up, a heavy rainstorm can hurt a house from top to bottom. Rain may seep in under the eaves, rotting the wood fascia. It can also pour directly onto the ground around the house, leading to foundation issues. Mold, insect infestation, flooded basements and more can result from this type of clogged gutter.

2. Blow Me Away

A falling tree limb struck this house in Salt Lake City, Utah (a common event during weather disasters). Any time shingles are worn and torn, they become much easier for the wind to lift off. You can see why it needs to have the roof restored before the next windstorm. There may also be hidden damage to the substructure or underlayment of the roof. Putting new shingles on without ensuring that all the other problems are fixed is like putting a bandaid on a bullet wound.

3. Fire and Water

Disaster is literally raining down on this residence that appears to be a victim of a house fire. The fact that it was left un-restored means it’ll be vulnerable to rainstorm damage. In the meantime, insulation in the walls that was soaked during efforts to extinguish the fire is probably festering with mold. Even worse, the house is directly joined to the neighboring structure! If the damaged house leaks or floods, this could potentially lead to problems for the adjacent dwelling. You should look at any attached structures on your property as part of your house. If they are vulnerable to infiltration by water, the rest of your home is also at risk.

4. All Hail the Tile Roof

Ah, the tile roof. Reminiscent of the Mediterranean and oh-so-dreamy blue skies. However, a roof like this on a home in states like Kansas and Texas can leave some homeowners very unprepared when hailstorms hit. Tile doesn’t respond well to sharp impacts and can easily crack under pressure from hail stones. The Midwest is particularly prone to severe hail. Storms regularly cause hundreds of millions in property damage every year. Any type of roof should be inspected after a heavy hail storm – but you can expect a less extensive insurance claim if your shingles are rated for hail resistance.

5. Light It Up

This old-fashioned straw roof would go up like a matchstick if a wildfire blew through town! Modern homes obviously don’t have thatch roofs. However, not all shingle materials are equally fire resistant. If you live in an area like the west coast that’s prone to wildfires, you should choose a ‘class A’ fire resistant roofing material.

6. Ice, Ice, Baby

This house in New England wasn’t equipped to prevent ice buildup during a recent snowstorm. The ice dam above the gutters could allow moisture to seep in under the shingles since proper drainage is inhibited. This type of roof leak can lead to rotting wood and mold-infested insulation. The problem is likely to get worse with each subsequent blizzard if it’s not addressed. If you’ve let a winter go by without checking the integrity of your roof, eaves, and gutters, inspect them soon!

7. Don’t Let the Rain Come Down

This skylight is quaint, but it’s obviously not leak proof. You can see the stains from previous water penetration along one corner. It’s ripe for another soaking with the next rainstorm. This old-style skylight has a flat surface and is designed to open – two features that aren’t actually needed and make the design much more prone to leaking. New, domed models that maximize light through refraction while allowing rain to run off onto the roof make more sense. No matter what type of skylight you have, you should check the flashing around it at least once a year to make sure there’s no chance of water getting in.

8. Does Anyone Have Noah on Speed Dial?

Basements are a fairly common house feature in northern areas of the U.S. They can be very useful for storage or an extra room (it’s the ideal spot for a “man cave”). But the basement in this photo shows you one common problem that can leave a home very unprepared for flooding. Imagine what’s going to happen down in this basement when snowmelt brings spring floods! Cracks like this are a sign of foundation problems that will only get worse with time – leaving a home vulnerable to cracked walls, busted plumbing, and worse.

Check out the flimsy corrugated roof on this house on stilts! Fortunately, this residence is located in the UK. If it was in Oklahoma, we can just see the entire roof being peeled off in a single swipe by a tornado. If Florida’s alligators don’t swallow you up, one of the state’s many sinkholes might. The worst hole formed in 1994 under a stack of phosphate mining waste. The gypsum stack contained 80 million tons of phosphogypsum, a corrosive, toxic, and slightly radioactive material. The hole was 400 feet deep and carried waste into the groundwater throughout most of Florida’s drinking water, causing widespread contamination that cost millions of dollars to clean up.

#2 Hawthorne, Florida

Devil’s Hole is a natural sinkhole just east of Gainesville. It does not seem that dangerous at first glance. It is extremely well hidden and may actually be one of the most beautiful sinkholes in the US. However, a lot of people have been injured there. It was used as a swimming hole for the locals until someone bought all the land around it and fenced it in. If you develop a sinkhole on your property, the first thing you should do is fence it so no one sprains an ankle or falls in (but you can skip the signs threatening to shoot any trespassers). Devil’s Hole is almost 300 feet and the water level in the center is at least 90 feet deep. Experts believe the water system that feeds this hole is connected to another entire chain of sinkholes in Florida.

#3 Jackson, Alabama

Neversink Pit is a natural limestone sinkhole that’s only 40 feet wide at top but widens deeper down to about 100 feet. Total depth is about 162 feet, but the holes bell shape formation makes it seem deeper than it actually is. The Southeastern Cave Conservancy, Inc. bought the land in 1995 in an effort to preserve it. A large population of bats inhabits the cave, and these are being protected by the SCCI. Like so many sinkholes that double as tourist attractions, spelunkers occasionally get into trouble here.

#4 Picher, Oklahoma

The fate of this town is another example of what happens when toxic waste and sinkholes mix. Picher, Oklahoma, used to be a prosperous lead and zinc mining town, until the huge heaps of mining waste began to give way. The area is considered too toxic to even clean up. In 2006, the government determined that the entire town might be swallowed up by the rapidly multiplying sinkholes at any time. The residents were bought out so they could move to safer ground.

#5 Daisetta, Texas

Like a tale of a fish that got away, this sinkhole got bigger and bigger very quickly – expanding from 20 feet wide to 900 feet wide in one day. You can actually see it happening in this video. The mess was made much worse by the fact that this was an area where oil drilling was taking place. The resulting mud and oil sludge created a Texas-sized mess.

What You Should Know about Sinkholes

No region of the country is exempt from this eerie phenomenon, including Mississippi. Besides the immediate risk of engulfment in a sinkhole, houses that surround unstable ground are at risk for damage from mudslides, flooding from broken pipes and serious foundation issues. You may be able to spot sinkhole activity in your area by looking for doors that no longer open smoothly and cracks around the windows and doors. Holes or bowl-shaped depressions in nearby yards, cracked sidewalks and dips that form suddenly in the street are also warning signs.

Who can forget the images of stranded dogs and cats on the television in the weeks after Hurricane Katrina? At Paul Davis Restoration/Emergency Services of Central Mississippi, our first priority is the safety and well being of your family — which of course, includes your pets. We have a soft spot for your furry loved ones and we know from experience that all it takes is a little preparation to avoid the heartbreak of seeing them injured in a storm. When bad weather approaches Central Mississippi, be sure you’ve planned ahead with these tips from Paul Davis Restoration to protect your four-legged companions from getting lost or injured. We suggest you keep this basic checklist for Socks and Buster on the fridge next to all your other emergency contacts.

Develop a written plan of action that includes your pet…NOW before any weather-disaster strikes. Play the “what if” game so that you can prepare for a variety of scenarios. Have a back-up plan in case things don’t work out with “plan A”. You should develop your plan based on the most likely weather-related disaster in your area. For example, if you live where wildfires rage every year, your plan will be all about evacuation. If you live in “Tornado Alley”, you should plan for how to keep your pet indoors with you when it’s time to batten down the hatches.
When it is safe to do so, leave early with your pet whenever a disaster emergency is declared. Generally, the longer you wait to move, the more dangerous the situation will become. Observe prior warnings and recommendations so that you are better prepared when an evacuation is ordered.
Include outdoor pets in your disaster preparedness plan. It’s too easy to forget these friends or assume that they can fend for themselves because they are outside. The truth is that they are likely to go missing even if they are not injured or killed. This means you should be on good enough terms with your outdoor pets to coax them into a carrier easily.
Most emergency public shelters and evacuation centers don’t accept pets. Find out in advance which locations in Central Mississippi are pet-friendly in case you need to leave your home to avoid a weather-related disaster. Remember that current vaccinations are an absolute must if you expect your pets to be welcome in any shelter. Consider evacuating to a pet-friendly motel if there are no shelters that accept pets. The following websites and search tools will help you locate motels, restaurants, places and services that allow pets under various circumstances: Go Pet Friendly, TravelPets, PetsWelcome, PetTravel, DogFriendly.
Consider pet insurance as part of any preparedness plan. Although ConsumerReports.org states that there is generally little value over the long run for the cost of premiums, the benefits of such a policy may depend on your location and whether you pet has special medical needs. It may be best to set up a self-insurance savings account specifically for the purpose of handling emergency situations for your pet. You can use this fund to pay for the cost of emergency supplies, veterinary care, evacuation, etc.
If you have sufficient notice of an incoming storm, talk to local boarding kennels and pet shelters about the preparedness of their facilities. Your pet may be able to safely ride out the storm in a kennel. This approach might be a good idea if you have small children who will need your undivided attention during an emergency. Ask about the capacity of the kennel – and whether they usually get overcrowded when there are weather-related disaster warnings.
If you must leave home, don’t leave your pets. You might be gone longer than you think, putting your pet at risk for dehydration and starvation. Never leave your pet alone in an evacuation area unless you absolutely have no other choice. Your pet will likely die if left inside a mobile home alone. Even in a safer structure, the chances of pet survival are slim, especially in heat or frigid temperatures. If they do manage to survive, this may be because they found a way to escape the house. They may not be there when you get back. If they are, they may have caused significant damage to your property while trying to get out.
Identification is critical for making sure your pet can be returned to you as soon as possible. Use a combination of contact tags (external collar tags and microchip) to make it easier locate a pet that is separated from you during a weather-related disaster. This is especially critical in large-scale disasters like tornadoes and hurricanes when local shelters and animal control centers may be dealing with a high volume of missing pets at one time.
Keep photos of your pet in a dry location in case you need to make lost posters. If you really want to be prepared, make up some “missing pet” posters before the severe weather hits, just in case you need them. Be sure to include a way to contact you that will still be accessible even if the power lines are down.
The safest area of your home for humans is usually also the safest area for pets. Make your furry friends comfortable with their favorite bedding and toys. Bring in a crate or carrier in case your pet becomes agitated and tries to get out of the room. This is especially important with cats since they can slip out very easily and run away. Keep all exit routes shut.
Put together an emergency travel kit for your pet that includes a carrier, leash or harness, food, water, towels, poop cleanup supplies, medications, etc. Include enough supplies to last several days at a minimum. Some organizations suggest a week minimum. This should give you enough time to find other resources. Make sure there are some First Aid supplies that can be used for your pet as well (gauze, bandages, disinfectant).
If you have reason to believe you might be out of the house when a weather-related disaster strikes, post prominent signs in the windows letting neighbors and rescue workers know there are pets inside. Include the names and descriptions of each pet along with any special handling instructions (such as ways to tempt them into the open with a favorite treat).
Exchange pet information with neighbors so they can help evacuate pets when you are not available to do so. Make sure anyone who has a key to your home is familiar and comfortable with all your pets. These friendly neighbors should know the animal’s habits and their special place where they are likely to feel safest. Animals are often frightened by high winds, thunder and heavy rain fall associated with weather-related disasters and will hide away.
Keep your pets close to you even after the severe weather is over. The debris left behind, contaminated water and stray animals running free in your neighborhood can continue to pose a threat to your pet’s life and health. Flooding creates lots of opportunities for pets to drink or drown in unsafe water. Wildfires can leave behind toxic residues including chemical-laden soot and ash from building materials. There may also still be smoldering remains that can burn your pet. Mudslides can create entrapment hazards even after most of the ground has stopped shifting. Broken glass is usually left behind by hurricanes, windstorms and tornadoes.
If your pet does get lost and you can’t find it in your neighborhood, call the local animal control office. They should have information on where lost pets are being housed waiting for owners to come pick them up.

A Surprising Checklist of Things You’ll Need for a Windstorm

You’ve seen the way blockbuster movies present a windstorm (whether straight-line winds, tornado, or hurricane). The lesson from Hollywood? If you don’t own an underground storage cellar, you’re going to end up flying through the air and swallowed up by a big, dark cloud. But forget the silver screen – Paul Davis of Central Mississippi has seen the aftermath of real storms, right in our area. We’ve experienced the true-life heartbreaking stories…and have proudly helped families restore their property after they’ve thought there was no way to repair the damage. In the process of helping property owners recover after a windstorm, we’ve also learned about some other surprising lifesavers that can protect Mississippians and your property from a windstorm. Here are 9 tips we hope can help you.

1. Your Door

Wind pressure can rip your home open at its weakest points. You may think the most likely points of damage are the windows, but doors are also vulnerable. Doors manufactured before 1994 aren’t usually rated for pressure. Consider replacing your exterior doors with newer models that are code approved for both wind pressure and debris impact. Have them installed to open outward rather than inward.

2. Wooden Furniture

A sturdy, solid piece of wooden furniture can be your best friend during a tornado or hurricane. As part of your emergency preparedness plan, think about which table, desk, or workbench you can easily move to the safest part of your house such as the bathroom or closet (make sure the furniture fits through the door). When you hide under this piece of furniture, you will have an extra shield against falling debris – including heavy pieces like roofing materials or tree branches.

3. Mulch

Gravel and rock are lovely choices for landscaping. But they can easily become deadly projectiles in high winds. They can break your windows and cause shrapnel-like damage to the human body. If you live in an area that is prone to windstorms, use materials like wood mulch instead of gravel in your flower beds. Choose to pave your driveway with concrete instead of pebbles.

4. Trimmed Hedges

Speaking of power lines, you can decrease your risk of electric shock by making sure the city is doing its job. Anytime you see vegetation and trees growing into the utility lines near your home, give the city a call to report this unsafe condition. When they cut back vegetation, this reduces the risk that you will step outside after a windstorm and find that downed power lines are energizing the puddles of rainwater around your home.

5. Mask and Goggles

You will need added protection if you absolutely must go outside to secure your belongings. Make sure you have dust masks on hand along with airtight goggles. They can also be helpful when a tornado is on the way since high winds can carry dust and other debris. Getting a splinter in your eye during a weather-related emergency makes a bad situation worse!

6. Duct Tape (Duck Tape)

Don’t laugh! This adhesive really is very useful during and after a windstorm. Securing windows with duct tape does little to improve protection from broken glass (boarding up your windows is ideal). But it can be helpful for other last minute safety adjustments since this tape is strong and water proof. You could use it to help keep smaller items in place should the roof blow off during a hurricane or tornado. For example, you might tape extra emergency-preparedness supplies and tools to the underside of heavy pieces of furniture. Duct tape can also help prevent water leaks around windows and doors from wind driven rain.

7. A Whistle

If you get trapped under debris when structures collapse in a tornado or hurricane, blowing a whistle may save your life. The sound will travel farther than your voice with far less effort. A loud whistle can sometimes be heard through solid structures. A safety whistle will get the attention of rescuers faster and save you from losing your voice from shouting.

8. Waterproof Heavy Duty Flashlight

You can use a bright flashlight to signal rescuers in low light situations. Sound does not carry very well during extreme windy events, especially upwind in a rainstorm. If you sustain injuries that prevent you from speaking, flashing a light can draw attention to you when you need help most (take a moment to learn SOS in Morse code if you don’t know it already). Power may be out immediately after a windstorm. A reliable emergency light source will help you get around in the dark without injury. Keep in mind that a flashlight may require backup batteries to ensure longer life.

9. Air Purifier

An air purifier that removes both particulates and chemicals may help keep your family comfortable indoors during a severe-weather event (assuming the power stays on). Since staying inside is your safest option in any windstorm, you might as well still have access to fresh air!

10. NOAA Weather Radio

If you’re lucky enough to live near the coast and own a boat, always carry an NOAA Weather Radio to warn you of wind storms and unexpected waterspouts. Waterspouts are cousins to tornadoes that form over the water – often during seemingly calm weather. They can be dangerous to boaters and can even move inland, causing damage and injury. Boaters should be particularly vigilant in the summer, when waterspouts are the most common. If you’re on the water, get out of the way by going at a 90-degree angle from the motion of its path. It may be tempting to draw in close, but a waterspout can overturn your boat or send items flying through the air (and these can become deadly missiles!).

Are You Underinsured? – Part 1

Price is the only thing many homeowners consider when purchasing a homeowners policy. Shopping around for quotes online has made it easy for people to buy insurance “cheap”, but this isn’t really the best way to purchase home insurance; especially if the policy leaves you underinsured.

According to a study conducted by Marshall & Swift/Boeckh LLC (MSB), nearly two out of three homeowners are underinsured. On average, homeowners only have enough insurance to cover 78 percent of the cost to rebuild or replace their home. In other words, if the average home price was $100,000, a homeowner would have to come up with $22,000 to have a restoration contractor rebuild their home – despite paying monthly insurance premiums.

Here are some tips you should follow, so that this doesn’t happen to you.

Make sure you have adequate coverage. It is recommended that you purchase the highest cap possible for your home. There are several tools on the internet that will help you determine this. AccuCoverage, for example, is a web tool that charges you $7.95 to complete a questionnaire to determine an estimate of the amount of coverage you should have on your home. Take the estimate you get from AccuCoverage and compare it to your current policy; it might be a good idea to sit down with your agent when you do this.
Don’t skimp on sewer backup and sump pump coverage. This isn’t covered in your standard homeowner’s policy. Often times homeowners ignore this endorsement to save money despite the fact that it only costs about $7 to $10 extra a month. In addition, when purchasing this insurance you should make sure the “cap” is enough to cover the complete restoration of your home. Cleaning up a sewer backup isn’t cheap, and you want to make sure you have enough money to repair your home and replace any unsalvageable contents after a restoration company finishes cleaning up.
Make any necessary adjustments. You may increase the value of your home when you make upgrades or do any remodeling to it. This may require you to increase your cap. It is devastating to have your sump pump fail, filling your newly-finished basement with water, and finding out that you’ll have to pay the bill for most of the repairs because you were underinsured. Meet with your insurance agent after you complete a remodeling project to review how the upgrades may affect your policy.

When purchasing insurance don’t be cheap. Let your insurance agent know that you want the best possible coverage for the money.

10 Home-Maintenance Tips for Spring

After a long, dark winter, spring's bright sun and warm winds are, well, a breath of fresh air. The only downside? All that sunshine spotlights your leaf-filled gutters, cracked sidewalks and the dead plants in last year's flower beds. Dwight Barnett, a certified master inspector with the American Society of Home Inspectors, shared this checklist to help you target the areas that need maintenance so you can get your chores done quickly, leaving you time to go outside and play in the sunshine.

Check for loose or leaky gutters. Improper drainage can lead to water in the basement or crawl space. Make sure downspouts drain away from the foundation and are clear and free of debris.
Low areas in the yard or next to the foundation should be filled with compacted soil. Spring rains can cause yard flooding, which can lead to foundation flooding and damage. Also, when water pools in these low areas in summer, it creates a breeding ground for insects.
Use a screwdriver to probe the wood trim around windows, doors, railings and decks. Make repairs now before the spring rains do more damage to the exposed wood.
From the ground, examine roof shingles to see if any were lost or damaged during winter. If your home has an older roof covering, you may want to start a budget for replacement. The summer sun can really damage roof shingles. Shingles that are cracked, buckled or loose or are missing granules need to be replaced. Flashing around plumbing vents, skylights and chimneys need to be checked and repaired by a qualified roofer.
Examine the exterior of the chimney for signs of damage. Have the flue cleaned and inspected by a certified chimney sweep.
Inspect concrete slabs for signs of cracks or movement. All exterior slabs except pool decks should drain away from the home's foundation. Fill cracks with a concrete crack filler or silicone caulk. When weather permits, power-wash and then seal the concrete.
Remove firewood stored near the home. Firewood should be stored at least 18 inches off the ground at least 2 feet from the structure.
Check outside hose faucets for freeze damage. Turn the water on and place your thumb or finger over the opening. If you can stop the flow of water, it is likely the pipe inside the home is damaged and will need to be replaced. While you're at it, check the garden hose for dry rot.
Have a qualified heating and cooling contractor clean and service the outside unit of the air conditioning system. Clean coils operate more efficiently, and an annual service call will keep the system working at peak performance levels. Change interior filters on a regular basis.
Check your gas- and battery-powered lawn equipment to make sure it is ready for summer use. Clean equipment and sharp cutting blades will make yardwork easier.

Hurricane and Tornado Preparedness

The First 5 Calls to Make After These and Other Major Disasters

Who should you call when a disaster strikes your home? In some cases, this depends on the nature of the catastrophe. If a major hurricane has hit Mississippi you may be in the middle of a natural disaster that is affecting hundreds or thousands of families. In this case, landlines and cell towers could be affected, limiting who you can contact immediately.

In contrast, if a tornado touched down the damage may be limited to a few homes. It’s still a disaster for you if your house was involved, but you’ll probably have access to more immediate support.

In general, here are the most important calls to make:

First Responders – Emergency services are likely to be overwhelmed in the event of a hurricane or tornado. Call 911 only if there is an immediate danger to your life and health or that of your family. Otherwise, contact neighbors or friends to help you out (or so you can help each other).
Utilities – A broken gas line or a downed overhead power line can be a serious hazard after a hurricane or tornado. Call the utility company right away to address the issue. Move to a safer area until a crew arrives and corrects the problem.
Loved Ones – You’ll want to contact family and friends to let them know you are OK and to check on their well-being. In the event of a major disaster, use text messaging when possible to minimize the overload on the voice network. Get in touch with at least one person who lives outside your local area. This individual may serve as an important contact point in getting you the help and information you need (such as the distribution locations for the American Red Cross or local relief agencies).
Shelter – If your home is unsafe or completely destroyed in a major disaster, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) may be able to provide temporary housing. The number is (800) 621-3362 to register for assistance. FEMA may also have vital information about where to find necessities like food and clothing after a disaster.
Restoration – Once you’ve ensured your family is safe, it’s time to start the process of rescuing your home. This involves contacting your insurance company, submitting a claim and working with a company that specializes in property damage clean up and repair. Most policies require you as the homeowner to make immediate reasonable repairs to your home following a disaster to prevent additional damage and will reimburse you for these repairs. Don’t wait for a contractor to knock on your door (there will be all kinds of fly-by-night repair companies coming through your town after hurricanes and tornadoes). Be proactive in calling a licensed restoration company that specializes in repairing the specific type of damage your home sustained in the disaster (we suggest Paul Davis Restoration/Emergency Services of Central Mississippi).

AdditionalTips:

The amount of warning youhave before an event can also affect your communication strategy. Tornadoes come with a different warning time than a hurricane. You might be able to make some of your calls ahead of time rather than after the fact. For example, notify your employer that you probably won’t show up for work tomorrow because a major weather event headed your way is likely to cause damage.

And if you know someone who is experiencing a disaster in their own city, be in contact with them and let them know you’re there to help. You may be able to serve as a resource to them even from thousands of miles away.

Bowl Week.. Top Plays To Keep Your Celebration Safe!

There are no instant replays when it comes to hosting a party or playing safe. Statistics show that the average household will bring 17 people together on the day of the game, making it one of the most-watched, most highly celebrated events of the year. UL, the leading product safety testing organization, has a playbook for the big day that can help hosts take an offensive position to create a safe celebration for family and friends:

Play #1: BLOW THE WHISTLE ON TV TIP-OVERS

Don’t let an unexpected touchdown dance knock over the TV. Overly excited fans are a given on Super Bowl Sunday. Make sure your TV and entertainment center are safely mounted.
- Verify that furniture is stable on its own. For added security, anchor to the floor or attach all entertainment units, TV stands, bookcases, shelving and bureaus to the wall using appropriate hardware, such as brackets, screws or toggles.
- Place the TV on sturdy furniture appropriate for its size or on a low-rise base.
- Push the TV as far back as possible from the front of its stand.
- Place electrical cords out of a child’s reach and teach them not to play with the cords.
- Remove items that might tempt kids to climb, like toys and remote controls, from the top of the TV and furniture.
Don’t get called for a penalty by burying extension cords under a rug. Don’t “hide” extension cords by running them under carpets or heavy items. The wiring can become worn, overheat and potentially cause a fire. Instead, get a longer cord and route it down the sidelines — next to the walls and out of high traffic areas. Also, don’t use extension cords that are cut or damaged.
Illegal formation: don’t plug too many cords into an outlet. Read the manufacturer’s instructions for the device(s) you will be using on power strips. Plugging in too many products into an outlet or power strip may cause a power outage or a fire.
Score a touchdown by buying products that have been tested for safety. Look for the UL Mark on electronics. Products that bear the UL Mark mean representative samples have been tested to UL’s rigorous safety standards and found to be free of foreseeable safety hazards.

Play #2: SCORE ONE FOR SAFETY During HalfTime SnackTime

Tackle grilling outside. Make sure the designated griller keeps his/her cooking outdoors. Grilling in garages, carports or even inside the house is extremely dangerous. It could not only cause a fire, but also be a risk of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. UL suggests you plan ahead and pre-cook during the pre-game and keep your grill a safe distance (10 feet if possible) from the side of your home.
Stand by your pan. Stay in the kitchen while food is cooking. Most fires in the kitchen occur because food is left unattended. If you must leave the kitchen or walk away from the grill to check the score, carry an oven mitt or grilling tongs with you as a reminder that something is cooking.
There are no instant replays when using turkey fryers. Be extremely cautious if using a turkey fryer. If not used correctly, this half-time snack-time activity could burn more than just your timeouts. Because turkey fryers pose a number of distinct safety concerns, including burn and fire hazards, UL has decided not to certify any turkey fryers.

Play #3: CHILD-PROOF AND DAD-PROOF FOR A FOOL-PROOF PARTY

Create safety zones to control the crowd. Limit the number of people in areas like the kitchen, especially when the stove or oven is in use.
- Also, use the teams’ pre-game stretches as a guide to get down on your hands and knees to search each room for objects or situations that may endanger children who will be at your home. Pay attention to sharp corners and small objects.
Adjust the lineup for a fun and safe party for kids. Make your home game day ready for children. If you’re rearranging furniture for the party don’t block exits with large items in case of an emergency. Pathways should be clear of small toys, throw rugs, electrical cords and other items that could cause children to trip or fall.
Get your game face on with water-based face paint. Safety Tips for New Year's Eve!

New Year’s Eve is a huge night foreveryone, which means crowds will be swarming toward all the metropolitan hubsaround the world. People feed off each other’s excitement, and sometimes thingscan get out of hand if safety precautions are not taken. Everyone wants to havean unforgettable night (in a good way!). By simply using some common sense, wecan keep it that way. Ring in the New Year safely!

Designate a Driver:
If you are going to be driving New Year’s Eve, don't drink and drive. If you have a friend who does not prefer to drink, make sure they take the wheel. You might even be on the water this New Year’s Eve. The person in charge of navigating the boat needs to be cautious, and this still applies to them! It is important to be safe on the water as well, so drink sensibly.
Don't forget about your pets! They are just as much a part of the family as everyone else. If you are using fireworks, anything with loud noises, or fire, be sure that pets are kept at a distance as well as children. None of these are a good mix. Candles are also a potential hazard.
Be Alert: Be aware of your surroundings and how others are acting. Stay away from those who are out of control and might cause harm. Taking preventive measures is key. If someone is really intoxicated, prevent them from trying to drive or leaving with someone they do not know. It's important to keep an eye out for each other.
Don't Drive: If you don't have to go behind the wheel, avoid it. More people will be driving under the influence on this particular night, so avoid a potentially dangerous accident by staying off the road. Otherwise, be alert and drive defensively. Most importantly, wear your seatbelt! Also, using public transportation is a wise option. If taking a cab is too expensive, crashing at a friend's place nearby is a convenient solution.
Stick Together: This way we can look out for our friends and family. Going out to parties and nightclubs means a fast-paced, crazy night; so be sure to travel in groups. Having a safety net around you in this environment, especially for women, is imperative.
Monitor your Alcohol Intake: A majority of people will be drinking on New Year’s Eve, and there is nothing wrong with that. Just be sure to pay attention to how much you and others are consuming. Drinking too much alcohol can have lethal affects. Be responsible.

Living in the southeast has many advantages – including not having to endure long, cold winters, and snowstorms! However, many of us have family and friends in the Northeast, Midwest, and Great Plains and safety. Paul Davis Restoration of Central Mississippi wants you to think about how you can reach out across the miles to help those in snow areas.
No matter where you live, there’s always something you can do to help out the people you care about when they are snowed in:

Prolonged power outages can be dangerous for families that are snowed in after a sub-zero blizzard. Since you can’t pick up loved ones and bring them to you, call to give them some helpful tips for preventing hypothermia. For example, they can wall off a small room with thick blankets to create an insulated space that is easier to keep warm.
If you have older or mobility challenged relatives, they could be snowed in by even a minor snowstorm. Stay in touch with relatives or neighbors nearby and arrange for them to check on your relatives and dig them out. Make sure they know help is on the way.
Have you recently moved from the northern U.S. to an area that rarely has ice or snow? It only takes half an inch of ice to trap people in their homes down South. Your years of experience with driving safely on ice and snow-covered roads could save lives. Offer to run any emergency errands for your loved ones to keep them off the road.
Do you have an older relative on a fixed income who is struggling to pay their heating bill? They could be in danger of hypothermia from having their heat cut off while they are snowed in. Many municipalities offer emergency fuel assistance programs that can help keep the heat turned on during severe winter weather. Get online and start making phone calls to ensure that your loved one doesn’t go without.
Many cities in warm regions have few snow plows and sand trucks available to treat major bridges and roadways after a snowstorm (look what happened in Atlanta). They probably won’t get around to de-icing many residential streets at all. If you have a pickup truck with four wheel drive, you could organize some salt and gravel to treat the driveway and street in front of a loved one’shouse.
Maybe you are enjoying a balmy weekend in Florida when you find out on Facebook that relatives up north are snowed in. Spend some time online chatting and suggesting ways for them to stay entertained (and how to keep the kids busy). Just don’t talk about how nice the weather is in your neck of the woods. SOUTHEAST / Follow These Home Safety Tips Before You Deck the Halls

The season of good cheer is an exciting time of year. The day afterThanksgiving, lights are already going up all over Central Mississippi.However, the hustle and bustle of the holiday season can lead to all kinds ofunfortunate accidents. You already know about the hazards of deep frying aturkey or climbing on a slick roof to put up Christmas lights. So instead, wehere at Paul Davis of Central Mississippi have gone the less obvious route.Here are 8 NEW holiday safety tips to protect your loved ones and your propertyfrom dangers.

NOT SO WARM TIDINGS: Homes located along coastal areas or major rivers can be at risk for flooding during the winter holidays. Winter windstorms can create tidal flooding, or an unexpected winter thaw up north can cause a sudden rise in river levels down south. FEMA provides a full list of ways to protect your home from flood damage here.
UNWANTED CHRISTMAS SIZZLE: You know you’re supposed to water your live Christmas tree to keep it from drying out and becoming a fire hazard. Just remember to unplug the lights first. Otherwise, you could end up as one of the dozens of people who have been electrocuted by their Christmas tree in the last 15 years.
HANDLE THY CANDLES: Are you using candles in your celebration of Hanukkah or Kwanzaa? Keep draperies out of the way when you place a menorah or kinara candle stand near a window. Extinguish the candles before going to bed.
OUTDOOR STRINGS AND THINGS: In the southeast, winter is a time when we can experience some nasty rain. Wet conditions greatly increase the danger of electrical accidents from Christmas lights. Using UL listed outdoor lights and extension cords plugged into GFCI outlets are standard precautions. A newer safety option is to buy solar powered Christmas lights that eliminate the need for cords and outlets altogether.
CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER: It’s all fun and games at Christmas until someone puts their back out. Cords from holiday decorations and toys can create a spider web of tripping hazards across the floor. Make sure to keep at least one pathway in the front room clear at all times.
CHRISTMAS ORNAMENT SURPRISE: Antique ornaments are whimsical and are often passed down from generation to generation. Don’t let those happy memories fool you. Old electrical bulb lights can cause shocks and fires. The ancient candle holders that preceded electricity are even more of a fire hazard. Many antique decorations contain high quantities of lead. When you learn the history of your heirloom Christmas decorations, be sure to find out about any dangerous materials used.
LEAD TO SAFETY: Did you know that even modern Christmas lights often have lead in their cords – but that only California requires these products to have a warning label? Remember to wash your hands after handling lights this year (or wear gloves).
HOLIDAY CRUNCH: You can almost hear the Grinch laughing sadistically whenever someone steps on a blown glass tree ornament. These beautiful baubles are like land mines waiting to explode. Replace yours with plastic ornaments that have a metallic finish. This is especially important if you have kids in the house.

September is National Preparedness Month

Every year, Paul Davis Restoration of Central Mississippi participates in National Preparedness Month in September to spread the word to individuals and families about the importance for being ready for disasters.

The program is sponsored by The Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Ready Campaign. Visit www.Ready.gov for information.

The key is to be informed and have a plan that you and your family discuss and practice. It is equally important to have an Emergency Ready Kit stocked and ready in case a disaster strikes. Below is a quick list of the items that every Emergency Ready Kit should contain.

Water – one gallon per person per day for at least three days
Food – at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
First aid kit – to include bandages; sterile gloves; antibiotic ointment; iodine/alcohol pads; medical tape; pain reliever; emergency blanket; thermometer; prescription medications, and other prescribed medical supplies.
Clothing – A change of clothing and a sleeping bag for each person
Battery-powered or hand crank radio, a NOAA Weather Radio, extra batteries
Cell Phone and charger
Flashlight and extra batteries
Filter masks – to cover mouth and nose
Heavy weight garbage bags, plastic sheeting and duct tape – to protect against debris and toxins
Waterproof, portable containers – for critical documents such as IDs, insurance policies, bank account records, computer backup files, emergency and law enforcement information, and other priority documents. Store a second set of records at an off-site location.
